The Project Aims

To faithfully reconstruct GWR Dean Goods locomotive number 2513 as a fully working locomotive, incorporating serviceable original parts where available. To provide opportunities to pass on heritage engineering skills and operate a Dean era locomotive on heritage railways. The 2513 Project is a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) – Registered Charity Number 1213776.

Location

The West Somerset Railway are generously hosting this project.

Why Do This?

The story of GW motive power before the 20th century is poorly represented, with little surviving from the Dean era or before. The 2513 proposal is for a “go anywhere” simply constructed locomotive of mid power and economical type, attractive for heritage lines and popular with GW enthusiasts. The existence of an available original boiler and relevant parts makes this project a resurrection rather than a complete new build. Importantly, no other locomotives will be compromised by the acquisition of original parts.
